More than Teaching: Why the Path to Professorship is Worth It
An HAW professorship means not only teaching but also driving research, shaping innovation, and guiding students. But why is the path to a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences worth it? Prof. Dr. Ann-Kathrin Hömme reports on her experiences and scope for design, and on what motivated her to pursue a career in teaching. She talks about opportunities for shaping things, practical relevance, and the motivating work with students.

The Prof:Me Mentoring programme
The Office for Equal Opportunities at the Technical University has been organising and supporting a mentoring programme for women since 2022. The target group primarily includes early-career female academics (ranging from Master's students, doctoral candidates, and lecturers for special tasks, to newly appointed professors), but also female employees of THL who are interested in professional development. Women from outside TH Lübeck who are potentially interested in a professorship are also very welcome as mentees.
mentoring is a tool for individual talent development and offers support in professional and personal growth. At its core is the tandem relationship between the mentee and their mentor, a more experienced person. The accompanying optional Workshop offer offers mentees and mentors opportunities for self-reflection and skill enhancement. Through the exchange in the regular network meetings gain access to important networks and insider knowledge.

5 Misconceptions About Lecturers at Universities of Applied Sciences and Higher Education Institutions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrGnGl3HqT0
A professorship at a university of applied sciences is often wrongly considered inferior to a university professorship. In reality, it is subject to the same high standards and demanding appointment procedures. The difference lies not in quality, but in focus: FHS professorships emphasise application, practical transfer, and teaching – deliberately designed to link science and practice and prepare students for specific professional fields.
5 Reasons Why You Won't Become a Professor!

Securing a professorship is fiercely competitive. Technical expertise alone is not enough – many fail due to other, often underestimated, factors in the appointment process. In addition to expertise, additional qualifications, a strategic approach, and a thorough understanding of the application requirements play a crucial role.

Das explained by the Tandem Model at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences on a website:
The „Career Lab (CarLa)“ at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences is identifying new ways to facilitate access to „University Professorships“, especially for individuals with doctorates who lack sufficient professional experience. A central element is the „Tandem Model“, which offers a flexible alternative to a complete move into professional practice. It allows individuals to continue working in teaching and research, serving as a flexible alternative to a complete change in their field of activity.
Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences has compiled detailed information here about the "Tandem Model":

Small tips for your CV from the German University Association:
"When applying for professorships, the focus is on academic qualifications:
- Publications,
- Third-party funds,
- Teaching and
- academic networks
are at the centre of interest. In this respect, the CV is a structured presentation of the professional career.
But can or should there also be room for personal matters?
Science is not just about expertise.
Universities are looking for personalities who fit in with the respective academic culture, the faculty and the social mission of the university.
Particularly in appointment procedures today, attention is often paid to personality, team spirit, values and interdisciplinary openness. A purely technical CV hardly reflects this. It is therefore increasingly accepted to include personal details in academic CVs - as long as they sensibly placed and carefully chosen."
